o1Labs Proposes Major Mina Protocol Upgrade Targeting Fall 2025
o1Labs has released a detailed proposal for the upcoming Mina protocol upgrade, outlining confirmed improvements like automated upgrade mechanisms, reduced slot times, and increased zkApp account update limits, with the aim of boosting performance and developer experience. Additional features under consideration include higher throughput, extended action/event limits, historical preconditions, and partial Rust node integration. Some items—like on-chain governance and automated staking payouts—remain dependent on community feedback and readiness. Formal MIPs for each change will be published soon, with the upgrade targeted for deployment in Fall 2025.
Key Takeaways from Mina X Space: New Roles, Upgrade Plans
In the latest X Space, interim Mina Foundation CEO Josh Cincinnati and o1Labs CEO Brandon Kase shared critical updates on Mina’s future. Technical development will now be fully led by o1Labs, while the Mina Foundation shifts its focus to decentralized treasury and governance. Mina is positioned as a lightweight ZK Layer that verifies off-chain proofs, not as an application execution layer. The Fall 2025 hard fork will introduce major improvements, including 90s slot times, automated upgrades, expanded zkApp capacity, and partial Rust node integration. Alternative execution environments were also discussed for non-Protokit apps, alongside ongoing work on bridges, shared state management (Project Untitled), and zk identity infrastructure.
Mina Web Node Testing Concludes – Community Feedback Fuels Next Steps
The Mina Foundation’s Web Node—a browser-based, block-producing node—was tested by 100 community members selected from over 300 applicants. Running fully in a web browser, the Web Node simplifies node operation and aligns with Mina’s vision of accessible decentralization. Testers provided valuable feedback on performance, leading to key fixes in memory usage, seed node reliability, and connectivity. Participants praised the ease of setup and the potential for eliminating reliance on RPC providers. Top contributors were awarded MINA tokens, and the learnings will guide future Web Node improvements.
Economics Design Releases Tokenomics Report for Mina
A third-party report by Economics Design has been published, offering an in-depth review of Mina Protocol’s current tokenomics. The study compares Mina to similar projects and explores potential changes, aiming to support community-led discussions around inflation, issuance, and sustainability. While the report serves as a reference for future MIP (Mina Improvement Proposal) initiatives, it does not represent an official recommendation. Full report here.
Fizk Protocol Shares Governance and Deployment Update
Fizk Protocol builder Charlie Mack, shared a progress update highlighting recent work on a proof-based governance system that will evolve into Mina’s first DAO. An early whitepaper has been published as the team begins seeking funding. However, full mainnet deployment is on hold until native multisig support becomes available on Mina to avoid custodial risks.
Community Tool Spotlight: Mina Graph Explorer
A new tool called Mina Graph Explorer has been introduced by community member naamah daemon. The tool allows users to visualize wallet and node connections across the Mina network. Whether you're investigating suspicious wallets or mapping your own wallet’s links, this browser-based graph tool is now live at mina.naamahdaemon.eu/mina-graph.
